Things to do in Chester
Chester wears its past on its sleeve. Once a Roman settlement, you can still see the city’s amphitheatre and get a view of the whole city walking its Roman walls. Chester Cathedral offers a unique collection of historic mosaics, or a ‘Chester From A Height’ experience from the top its spire.
Nature abounds, from the large and popular Grosvenor Park in the centre of Chester, to the river Dee which cuts through the city. Grab a row boat, hop on a river cruise or simply enjoy a walk along the banks.
The award-winning Storyhouse is a must-see. The stylish building houses a theatre, cinema, library, restaurant and various arts spaces. It’s a creative hotspot with a packed programme for all ages, and brilliant family events.
Chester Zoo, located a short drive or bus ride from the city, is one of the largest in Europe boasting penguins, lions and elephants among its 35,000 animals. Don’t miss the free-flying bats and butterflies, or spotting tigers and warty pigs the Islands boat ride.
Racing has been taking place at The Roodee, Chester’s racecourse, since 1539, and Chester Races continues to be a big event in the local calendar.

Chester’s quirky indoor market is also not to be missed. Its eclectic range of street food, from Thai to tacos, and Jamaican cooking to Napolitan pizza, earned it the title of top indoor market in 2020.
The city’s coffee scene has bloomed in the last five years, with amazing options in all corners of the city, from the stylish Obscure to the joyously decorated Flower Cup.
